In the Disgaea universe, magic is the use of spiritual force and mana to create different effects, known as "spells". It is a power that can be used by those trained in it. The inner workings of magic are very complex, and there are a lot of factors involved in casting spells, but you don't have to understand how magic works to use it. [1]

Magic uses the spiritual power of the Netherworld, Celestia, Human World, and space. It also draws from the "Seven Spiritual Forces", the elements that make up the universe. By combining these forces with mana, the resulting chain reaction causes the release of unique effects, such as damaging foes with blasts of ice or curing allies of ailments.

Magic spells vary from world to world, but the effects are the same. For example, angels may use angel language and demons may use demon language to cast a spell, but if the same magic is used, the effect is the same. Casting a spell is a form of chant, so magic-users can use magic even if they're not casting a spell.[2]

Anyone can learn to use magic by training their mental state and embodying a spiritual force. However, only certain classes can start learning magic from the beginning because of their inherent mental state. In order to use magic, a specific mental concentration is needed for each type of magic, which is difficult for non-magic-users to understand. Non-magic-using classes such as Warriors and Archers can learn magic through "Extra Gain" if their pupils are magic-users; this is because they are learning the mental concentration from their pupils.[3]

The Five Types of Magic

Magic is categorized by type. Most of these types correspond with a particular element, or "spiritual force".

Fire

Fire magic uses the power of fire. One of the basic types of attack spells alongside ice and wind magic, fire spells materialize fire mana to burn an opponent. [4]

Ice

Ice magic uses the power of ice. Spells of this type use ice mana to freeze airborne vapor and any enemies nearby. Mana is directly converted to frost, so the temperature of the vicinity becomes almost sub-zero. [5]

Wind

Wind magic, of course, uses the power of wind. Wind mana is used to form a tornado to tear enemies apart, but it can't be used to simply blow enemies away. [6]

Star

Star magic uses the infinite force of space, and is the most powerful of the magic types. Star mana is used to gather power from Earth and space to inflict damage to enemies. Star mana is hard to control, so the caster must have a strong mind. [7]

Unknown

Unknown magic falls under a "miscellaneous" category that doesn't qualify for other classifications, and includes effects such as healing and support magic.[2]

Healing magic uses the spiritual force of life to create healing mana, and can be used to heal wounds or cure targets of ailments. While useful, healing magic is generally despised by the Netherworld[8], though healer classes such as clerics are fairly common among demons. This may be confused with the spiritual force of holy, which has an element of destruction and is thus not ideal for healing magic.[9]

Support magic uses the spiritual force of dark, creating evil mana that is used to strengthen its target. It can increase a person's ability by increasing body activity or mental health. However, it can't cure any abnormal conditions.[10] Magic Knights are particularly specialized in support magic.

Difference from Specials

Special abilities, such as the ones used by monsters and named characters, often have effects similar to magic. However, these use the spiritual force within one's body, and demon power increases their usability. It's impossible for others to learn the ability, so it is called a special ability. Even if they look similar in appearance, the difference between special abilities depends on the make-up of each person.[11]

Special abilities with healing powers are uncommon amongst demons; only angels can master healing abilities. Flonne and Vulcanus are two such angels with abilities that can heal allies. The Winged monsters of the Netherworld can heal demons by using Holy Dust, said to be an item that was given by (or stolen from) the angels. Succubi also have healing abilities such as Evil Healing; though they seem like straight up demons, their wings suggest that they may be descended from fallen angels, which may be where succubi inherited their healing powers.[12]

Resistances to Magic

Most, though not all, beings have some resistance or weakness to fire, ice, and wind magic. Certain objects such as Geo Symbols may also bear these resistances.

Innate resistance to star magic doesn't seem to exist, though some demons have evilities that mimic such an effect.
