- "A place darker than a pitch-black cave, located deeper than the depth of the seas.
- It is a cursed land where evil reigns and foul beings dwell.
- Nobody knows its whereabouts,
- but everybody fears its existence..."[1]
Definition
The Netherworld (魔界, lit. "demon world") is the setting where many games in the Disgaea series take place. In the games' intro narrations, it is commonly described as a lawless world dominated by demons and monsters, where cruelty and chaos run rampant.
The term "netherworld", confusingly, has three meanings.
- The general realm of demons; one of the "Three Worlds" alongside Celestia and the Human World
- Any such planet dominated by demons and/or an Overlord. This includes former "human worlds" such as Veldime.
- In the case of nameless netherworlds such as in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness' or Disgaea 4's settings, it is simply referred to as "the Netherworld".
- Such netherworlds can also be referred to by their ruling Overlord (eg. "Laharl's Netherworld")
